Carat refers to the weight an size of any particular diamond. Carat is the most basic of the "Four Cs" and has the most impact on price. The metric carat, which equals 0.20 gram, is the standard unit of weight for diamonds and most other gems. Gemological laboratories measure carat weight when the diamond is loose (unmounted). Don's confuse carat with karat as karat refers to gold quality and carat is diamond weight.

Color is the natural amount of intrinsic yellow in a diamond. Diamonds are valued by how closely they approach colorlessness – the less color, the higher their value. Color "D" to"F" is colorless and "G"- "J" is near colorless.

Color begins to be noticable at "I"-"J" and lower. Fancy color diamonds are measured on a different scale entirely. Color is important since it can be detected by the naked eye.

Clarity measures a diamond's purity. Formed deep within the earth,  under extreme heat and pressure, they contain unique birthmarks, either internal inclusions or external blemishes.

Cut determines the Reflection and Refraction of Light in a Diamond. A well-cut diamond will appear fiery and brilliant. A poorly cut stone may appear dark and lifeless, despite its color or clarity grade.diamond-cut-scale

An Ideal Cut is a combination of depth, table, and finish. Utilizing the angles sends briliance accross  and  through the top.

Polish lines are Microscopic marks left on the facet surfaces during the cutting process. These polish lines are not visible to the naked eye and can only be detected under a 10x loupe

A Lab certificate is a diamond's fingerprint describing its 4 C's measurements & angles.

Depth percentage is the ratio of the total depth of the diamond (from table to culet). For instance, if the total diameter of a round diamond is 6.00 mm and the total depth is 4.00 mm, then the depth percentage is 66.7%.

The Table is the flat facet of the upper most part of the diamond. this facet is the "window" of the diamond and determines how much light the diamond outputs. Each shape has its own philosophy as to the Ideal % ranges.

Fluorescence is an intrisic property of a diamond displaying a natural blue fluorescence under any  ultraviolet light. A strong blue fluorescence can give a "D" or "E" colored diamond a milky hue, but will help a lower colored diamond appear whiter.

fluorFLUOR

Fluorescence will act as a neutralizer and any intrinsic yellow will be neutralized giving the diamond a whiter appearance. However, under UV light the diamond will illuminate with a bluish tint.
